About Our Founder

Multi-passionate. Mission-Driven. Magic-Making.

I’m April Johnson, founder of Johnson Works.

After two decades in public service and operations, I uncovered a hard truth: Brilliance often gets buried under busywork.

The most passionate entrepreneurs and mission-driven nonprofits were spending more time managing tasks than advancing their vision.

Johnson Works was born to change that.

We help purpose-driven organizations reclaim their time and focus by designing systems that empower—not overwhelm. We don’t just implement workflow automation. We architect freedom.

From solo founders to growing teams and resource-conscious nonprofits, we build operational foundations that allow your brilliance to flourish.

Your time is valuable.
Your mission is vital.
Let’s maximize both.

My Unexpected Pivot

I never imagined I’d step away from the public sector. For seventeen years, I poured my energy into serving the public good — navigating complex healthcare regulations, managing million-dollar programs, and working alongside dedicated people who shared my commitment to efficient, impactful systems.

But over time, my curiosity and career goals evolved. I felt pulled toward new ways to use my skills. I pursued an advanced degree in regulatory compliance and developed a strong interest in workflow design and automation.

Then, unexpectedly, my role came to an end. Instead of seeing that moment as a setback, I chose to see it as an invitation to pivot. It was my chance to reimagine how I could help organizations operate smarter and more sustainably.

What I Took With Me

That transition forced me to take a step back and really look at the strengths I’d built over nearly two decades. Public service gave me a rock-solid foundation in public health, program management, and compliance.

I asked myself: How can I combine what I know about operations with my passion for designing systems that truly work — and my instinct to see the bigger picture?

One quote stuck with me during this time:

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” — Abraham Maslow

I chose growth.
